When things get stressful in our lives, often one of the first things to fall to the wayside are little acts of self care. These important self care practices help keep us sane and keep are stress levels down so that we can be the best version of ourselves.
Feeling stress out all the time is not good; this probably seems pretty obvious to most of you. For our overall well-being, though, long term stress is actually even more detrimental to your health than you might think.
Stress is unhealthy for mental health. Long term stress causes people to have less control of their emotions, which leads to a feeling of losing control of their life. Small self care practices can lead you to be more mindful of your emotions and will bring awareness to what in your life triggers stress.
Chronic stress is not only bad for you mentally, but it can seriously affect your physical health as well. Stress has been linked to many diseases including heart disease and diabetes. Stress can cause people eat more and move less, leading to weight gain.Stress can also negatively impact hormones, especially in women.
Stress makes communication in relationships much more difficult and strained. If you’re stressed out, this makes you less patient and more inclined to lash out at one another. External stressors, like career or finances can often be a main source of stress, so it’s important to be mindful about what stresses you out so that it does not spill over into your relationships with your partner, friends, and family.
To calm your mind, try meditating. Sometimes meditation seems like a hassle when you’re already busy and stressed, but even a practice as simple as taking 5 deep breaths can completely change your mood for the better.
Another way to soothe your body and relieve stress is by drinking herbal infusions. Herbal infusions are similar to herbal teas, but the herbs are steeped for much longer, increasing the vitamin and mineral content. This method can be used with so many different kinds of herbal infusions, depending on what health benefits you’re looking to get out of your infusions. For stress relief, chamomile is a great herb to try, and it can have many other health benefits as well.
Place herbs in a quart sized jar and fill with hot water. Steep the herbs for at least 4-8 hours in the refrigerator, though overnight is even better. Drink up and enjoy!
