Is Your Skincare Really Only Skin Deep?

< Back to The Truth About All-Natural Plant Based Skin Care Products

More people are more concerned with what they put in their body than ever before. What is just as important, however, is what we put on our body. Studies have shown that our bodies absorb up to 60% of what we put on our skin. This idea makes complete sense when you consider that nicotine and birth control patches both deposit substances through the layers of our skin into our bloodstream.

Think about it this way– if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin.

All natural, organic ingredients have fewer toxins and are better for your skin in the long run. Ingredients like plant extracts, cold-pressed oils, and essential oils are all wonderful assets to your skincare routine and are generally safer than conventional products.

Better For Your Skin

Many natural products are inherently better for your skin. You can feel good about using high-quality natural products because you know exactly what they contain. For example, Shea butter is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help soothe sunburns and inflamed skin due to acne. They only ingredient in it is Shea butter, and it does it’s job very effectively without any negative side effects.

FDA Regulation

Cosmetics and skin care products are not regulated by the FDA, and therefore, many products contain ingredients that you shouldn’t put on your skin. Many of these chemicals not only affect your skin, but can have a negative impact on your health. One of the major ingredients to watch out for is synthetic fragrance. Fragrances are typically added to cover up the foul smell of chemicals, but the fragrances are a blend of chemicals themselves. Further, companies are not even required to disclose what chemicals are lurking in the fragrances. Sticking with natural products will calm your mind because you can altogether avoid the health risks of these chemicals.

Ingredients to Avoid

A great resource to consult when looking into skincare and cosmetics is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database. They provide tons of useful information about which products on the market are safe, and which ones to steer clear of. Here are some of ingredients to watch out for:

  • Sulfates
  • Parabens
  • BHA
  • Petrochemicals
  • DEA, MEA, and TEA
  • Propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol
  • Triclosan
  • Synthetic dyes
  • Synthetic fragrances
  • Talc

Environmental Concerns

Synthetic chemicals in cosmetics and skin care not only have negative effects on your skin, but they can also have damaging effects to the environment when we wash them down the drain. Many of the health-hazardous chemicals, such as BHA, make their way from the sewers to large bodies of water and bioaccumulate in the ocean and ultimately damage sea life.

A natural skincare routine is one of the best favors you can do for your skin, your health, and the environment. By educating ourselves, we can make informed decisions as consumers. Since our skin is like a sponge, soaking up whatever we put on it, try to only use high quality, organic products.
